Ringu 2 (1999)

Rating: D

Dir: Hideo Nakata
Star: Miki Nakatani, Hitomi Sato, Kyoko Fukada, Nanako Matsushima

Following on mere hours after the events of the first film, you discover a little more about the incidents which have already happened, while also having to cope with the events has they unfold here. These focus on a psychic child who has become the receptacle for the evil force which kills those who watch a certain video tape. Once again, a journalist and a maths teacher – colleagues of those from Ring – are involved in the quest, and you get much the same mix of striking visuals and…well, not that much else. Certainly, I can’t deny that a spooky atmosphere is efficiently established, but rarely is anything done with it. Instead, things just peter out without any kind of pay-off, and you reach the end with no sense of closure as another sequel is flagged. At the risk of sounding crude, this is a movie which is great at foreplay, but possesses a two-inch dick.
