[13] This is possibly the strangest film to come out of Hollywood in years and I’m not quite sure what to make of it. Telephone operator Rogers, disenchanted with a life of depravity, gets religion and heads off into the desert with her daughter, convinced the end of the world is near. I spent most of the film wondering when it was going to slip over into full-blown zealotry, as it’s pretty sympathetic to religion (even to Jehovah’s Witnesses!). But it stubbornly refused to go, and had my hair standing on end with some effective apocalyptic imagery and a last half-hour of general weirdness. Thought provoking stuff, albeit the thoughts were mostly “Eh?”.
